Learning, laughing and living under canvas!

From 4th to 6th September, The Great Big Climate Circus ran its first Climate Camp, and we were lucky enough to be invited to camp at Westonbirt Arboretum. The weekend brought together young people from across Gloucestershire who share a passion for climate action and nature.

Settled in the tranquil setting of the Community Shelter, we spent the weekend cooking delicious vegan meals over the fire while discussing the positive impact people can have by eating one less meat-based meal each month.

We also took part in practical sessions with a Gloucestershire bat and moth specialist, where we learned about bats and enjoyed a magical nighttime walk through the arboretum, spotting several bats on the first evening. On the second night, we set up moth traps and collected and recorded our findings the following morning. Who knew moths could be so beautiful, or that they play such an important role as indicators of climate change?

Another highlight was a mindful photography walk, which helped us strengthen our connection with nature and take a moment to slow down and appreciate the beauty around us. One young person told us it was the most relaxed they had felt all week, while another said they did not want the weekend to end.

Overall, the weekend was filled with fun, laughter, and important discussions about the climate and nature crisis, how it makes us feel, and what we can do about it. Keep your eyes peeled to see how we will be supporting young people to turn their ideas into reality.
